Our advice corner
Winter, humidity, house settling and plain old wear all leave their marks on locks. The advice here helps you tell normal ageing from a real problem, and it explains what you can safely do yourself and where a professional hand is worth having.

Lockout Services
How should I look after my lock so it stays reliable?
A little attention twice a year is enough. Follow your lock's own care instructions: many take a puff of dry graphite or PTFE lubricant worked in with the key, some a specified liquid product instead; general-purpose oils collect grit. Retire keys that have worn thin and cut fresh ones from a crisp original or the code. Snug up hinge and strike screws each spring and fall as the door moves with the humidity. A key that starts needing a wiggle is an early warning worth acting on. Home Lockout Service
We have just taken over a unit and have no keys for the old locks. Is that a lockout?
It is treated as one, with the same authority check: your new lease and identification settle it. The locksmith opens the previous occupant's locks, then rekeys or replaces them so keys still floating around from the last tenant stop working. It is also the moment to decide how the unit will be keyed: one key for every door, separate keys for the cash office and stockroom, or cores that suit a growing staff. Business Lockout Service
What happens if the piece cannot be removed?
It is rare, and it is discussed before anything changes. A glued, jammed or corroded-in fragment can usually still be reached by taking the cylinder off the door and working the plug out from the back. If even that fails, the cylinder is drilled where plug meets housing, sacrificed and replaced on the spot with new keys cut, so the door locks normally by the time the locksmith leaves. Broken Key Extraction
What should I have ready when I call about a break-in?
Whether the police have been called and any occurrence number; whether everyone is safe and the property is empty of intruders; which opening was forced and whether it closes at all; whether the damage is to the lock, the frame, the door or the glass; whether keys, remotes or codes were taken; whether you own, rent or manage the property; and whether there is glass beside the door. Change or Rekey Locks
What happens to my old keys?
They become ordinary pieces of brass. Once the cylinders are pinned to the new combination, the old keys turn nothing on your property, so there is no security reason to keep or hide them. Hand them to the locksmith for disposal or drop them in the metal recycling. If a former roommate or contractor still has one, it no longer matters, which is the whole reason for the visit. Keep only the new set, counted and tagged. Lock Rekeying
What do backset and bore mean, and why does the locksmith ask?
Two measurements decide whether a deadbolt fits your door. Bore is the diameter of the big hole through the face, 54 mm on most current hardware. Backset is how far the centre of that hole sits from the door's edge, 60 mm or 70 mm on nearly all residential doors. A replacement must match both to use the existing holes, and a fresh installation is cut to match the knob below, so knowing them ahead puts the right hardware on the van. Deadbolt Installation
Is it possible to upgrade just the exterior locks now and handle interior doors later?
Yes, and it is a common way to spread the work out. Exterior doors carry the security load, so starting there with a graded deadbolt and a reinforced strike covers the part that matters most first. Interior locks, passage sets, privacy locks on bathrooms and bedrooms, can be scheduled for a later visit without affecting anything already done, and the locksmith can note what was fitted so the second visit matches it. Does a rented home need the landlord involved for this work?
Repairing a lock so it works as before is ordinary maintenance, but anything that changes who can open the door, such as a rekeyed cylinder or new keys, is something a tenant and landlord are expected to agree on and share keys for. The locksmith asks up front who should receive keys and can leave a note of what was done for the property manager, so both sides know what is on the door. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

High Security Locks
Will opening my safe damage it?
In most cases the lock and case are left intact, since manipulation, decoding and manufacturer reset paths all work the mechanism the way the original combination would. Drilling is kept for cases where the gentler routes are unavailable or exhausted, aimed at one small point the manufacturer marks as repairable, and patched before the visit ends; a skilled technician aims to leave the rest of the body, hinges and finish unaffected, though the outcome and any effect on the safe's rated protection level depends on its construction. Safe Opening & Combination Change
How much weight does a filled safe put on the floor?
It depends entirely on the unit's size and construction, since the steel body itself usually weighs far more than whatever ends up inside it. A small document safe and a large commercial unit sit at very different points on that scale. Confirming the safe's own weight before delivery, and checking it against the floor it will sit on, is part of the assessment rather than something guessed at on arrival. Safe Installation & Servicing
Is a smart lock more secure than a high security mechanical lock?
They solve different problems. A keypad or smart lock manages who can enter and when, and many have no keyway to pick. A high security mechanical lock resists physical attack and controls key copying without batteries, apps or connectivity. Many businesses use both: electronic access on high-traffic doors and high security cylinders on rooms that must hold regardless of power. The locksmith helps you match the tool to each door rather than choosing one philosophy. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks
How often should a business change its keys as a matter of routine?
There is no fixed interval. Rekey on events rather than on a calendar: a key not returned, a lease change, a break-in, a renovation crew finished, or a key count that no longer matches the register. Businesses with a good register and a restricted keyway often go years between rekeys because nothing prompts one. A yearly check of the register against the keys on the hook is the habit that tells you when the time has come. Commercial Rekeying
What happens if a department splits or a business reorganizes?
The existing chart is the starting point rather than a blank page. Doors that move to a new department are reassigned within the existing hierarchy where the cylinders and platform allow it, and only the affected levels are touched. A reorganization is usually an adjustment to the record, not a reason to rebuild the whole system from the ground up. Master Key System Design
What maintenance does the system need going forward?
Ongoing maintenance is light: checking the battery backup and the request-to-exit device periodically, keeping reader surfaces reasonably clean, and revoking credentials promptly once someone leaves. Door and frame alignment is worth a look at each change of season, since a shifted door can affect how cleanly an electric strike or a magnetic lock releases. Access Control Installation
Can a padlock or extra deadbolt stay on a door that has this hardware?
No additional fastening should stay on an exit door that does not release the same way the primary device does. A hasp, padlock or separate deadbolt added at some point for extra security is a common finding on an older door, and removing or replacing it with something that releases under the same push is part of bringing that opening back to a single, reliable exit. Car Keys
My car has push-button start. Does that change anything?
It changes what happens after the door is open. Entry is the same as any other car. Starting depends on the immobiliser recognising a fob, so if your fob's battery is dead you hold it against the start button or in a marked pocket in the console, which the locksmith shows you. If the fob itself is lost, a new one is programmed where the vehicle's own security system supports it, though some models need dealer credentials, tools or parts first. Car Lockout Service
My copied key opens the doors but the engine cuts out. Why?
The blade was copied but the chip was not. A hardware-store duplicate cut onto a plain blank has the right teeth, so it turns the locks and the ignition, yet the immobilizer hears no answer and shuts the engine off after a moment. The remedy is a proper transponder key: a blank with the correct chip, cut to your blade and programmed to the car, or a chip cloned from a working original. Car Key Replacement
Is it possible to leave out certain functions on the spare, like remote start?
Yes. A spare can be built to do everything the first key does, or scaled back to just the blade and chip that unlock a door and start the engine, without a remote start button or a trunk release. This is agreed before programming begins and is a deliberate choice rather than a lesser copy, useful for a valet, a young driver, or anyone the household wants kept to essential access. Spare Car Key Duplication
Do I need to bring my car anywhere, or does the work happen where it is?
The vehicle generally stays where it is parked, since the equipment used for programming travels to it rather than the other way around. What matters more than the location is that the vehicle itself is present for the visit, since most procedures read information directly from the car as part of registering the new fob.
