Broken Key Extraction
In the parking lot your car key snapped in the driver's door. You are holding the plastic head with the buttons on it, the metal blade is inside the lock, and the spare is on a hook at home.
Broken Key Extraction
Running a shop or an office in Waterloo means trusting a few people with a few keys. We help you keep track of who opens what: rekeying when staff move on, master key systems that make sense, sturdy commercial hardware on the back door, and exit devices so everyone can leave without hunting for a key.
Waterloo, Ontario
2021 census · what it means at the door
33%Newer homes
About 33% of homes in Waterloo were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
New construction settles in its first years, and a door that closed perfectly at move-in can begin to catch as the frame finds its final position. A locksmith visiting a newer home adjusts strikes and hinges so the bolt throws freely again.
49%
Single-detached houses make up about 49% of homes in Waterloo (2021 Census).
In mixed neighbourhoods, a family may move from an apartment to a house or the other way around. A locksmith who knows both kinds of door can rekey the old place for the next occupant and set up the new one on the same visit.
Locksmith services
Every lock service we provide in Waterloo starts with the same first step, which is looking at the door properly before deciding anything. The individual pages below explain what that look involves for each job, how the work is carried out, and what to expect from the hardware afterwards.

The kick is the most common attack on a residential door, and a standard strike plate held by two short screws fails to it. Reinforced strikes and door-edge wraps are the least glamorous part of high security and the part most often worth doing.

Commercial
A store safe that will not open, a combination nobody remembers, a floor safe that needs moving or a new one that needs bolting down: safe work sits under commercial services here, alongside the doors that stand between the street and the safe.

A home lockout service is a visit whose whole purpose is to get you back inside your own home when the door is locked against you. The locksmith first confirms you have the right to be there, usually by matching photo identification to the address or seeing a lease, deed or property-management…
1 of 3
We walk the house with you, note every exterior lock and ask which doors you want on one key. That decides the pin work and the number of keys to cut.
2 of 3
Each cylinder comes out, gets new pins to match a fresh key, and goes back in. Old keys stop working the moment the cylinder is back in place.
3 of 3
We try each new key in each lock, from outside and inside, hand you the set and explain how many copies exist so you know exactly who can get in.
It helps if there is one. A crisp spare is the ideal pattern for the replacement, better than the broken halves and far better than a worn copy. It also lets the locksmith test the cylinder the moment the fragment is out, which shows whether the pins and springs are sound. If the spare is itself bent or worn, mention that too; it is a candidate for retirement rather than a pattern.
No. The work happens inside the cylinder, so the bolt, handle, finish and strike plate stay exactly as they are, and nothing new is cut into the door. The only visible change is the key in your hand. If a cylinder does have to be replaced, because its keyway is incompatible with the others or it has worn out, the locksmith picks one in a matching finish so the door keeps a consistent look.
Not when it is done for that door. Steel-clad doors are cut with a fine-toothed hole saw run slowly through the skin, guided by a jig so the saw cannot skate on the smooth face, and finished from both sides so each skin stays clean. Fibreglass is scored first so the surface does not chip. Shavings are vacuumed from the foam core, and the edge is finished with a collar or plate suited to the stile inside.
Very little is needed. Whatever lubricant and interval the cylinder maker specifies, worked into the keyway with a few turns of the key, keeps the pins free; using the wrong product collects grit instead of helping. Wipe salt off exterior hardware during winter melts. Snug the hinge and strike screws each spring and fall as the door moves with humidity. Cut spare keys from a crisp original rather than a worn copy.
The visit opens with a look at what the safe needs to protect and where it will sit, moves into positioning and anchoring for a new unit or bolt-work and lock testing for an existing one, and ends with the lock cycled several times and a combination or code set that only the owner knows. The exact order shifts depending on whether the job is a new installation or ongoing servicing.
